Frequently asked questions
Why shouldn't I use plastic?
Once there was a stone age, a bronze age, and now we're in the middle of the plastic age. In total, humans produced more than 8 billion tons of plastic. Every year, this number is growing by 300 million tons. Only 9% get recycled, 12% get burned and as a consequence, harmful gases are leaked, and 79% of all plastic ends up in dumps or our oceans, where it stays for hundreds and thousands of years. In the end, microplastic ends up in humans as well. We want to fight against that, and we know you want that too.
Why shouldn't I use bio-plastic?
Consumers are being lied. The industries claim to recycle and are dishonest about the true nature of their products and their impacts on planet earth. None of their solutions work in practice, and, as a consequence, nature suffers great damage. The majority of people nowadays are victims of green washing.
We asked 391 composting plants if it is possible to compost bioplastic in their plants. Only 2% said yes. Bioplastic requires a laundry list of highly-specific conditions to break down. The result is that bioplastic will sit in that landfill right alongside other plastics for a very long time. Bioplastics can't be disposed in your organic waste - but BAO products can.
Why shouldn't I use paper?
Paper production requires wood on an enormous scale. Nearly 4 billion trees worldwide are cut down each year for manufacturing paper products, and millions of animals are getting killed. Paper productions use four times more energy and 50 times more water compared to plastic manufacturing. Industrial paper production expels hugely high rates of CO2 emissions into our atmosphere, which accelerates climate change. Another reason why you should not use paper is that paper does not even meet the requirements for single-use tableware. It's necessary to add plastic coating, which makes its recycling impossible.
Why should I use BAO products instead?
Our innovative products are made out of 100% natural and organic raw materials such as our BAObab fibers, plant starch, natural minerals, plant wax, plant milk, vegetable gelling agent, vegetable thickener, and water.
After their use, all BAO products can be disposed of in organic waste or garden compost, where they decay within 50 days. Every BAO cup will be exchanged for plastic, bio-plastic, or paper, a little more rainforest, a little less plastic in our oceans or landfills, and more animals will be saved from harmful materials. Our products are 100% forest-free, 100% plastic-free, and 100% Ultra compostableTM, plus their manufacturing uses 70-80% less water, energy, and require no chemicals in their production.

What are BAO products made of?
BAO products are made out of 100% natural and organic materials such as water, plant wax, plant milk, plant starch, natural minerals, vegetable gelling agent, vegetable thickener, and our BAOBAB fibers.
Are BAO products food safe?
BAO products are certified as food safe. We passed all food contact tests with DEKRA, a German company that offers technical, security, and standards compliance services. Across Europe, DEKRA is the market leader company for its services. We hold all certifications.
Are BAO products vegan?
Yes. Our products are made out of 100% plant-based materials. No animal by-products are or will be ever used.
Does your company use cultivatable land for its BAOBAB trees?
How should I store BAO products?
Do not store BAO products near heat, such as direct sunlight, near an oven or radiator. Avoid storing BAO products at temperatures over 40 C° as they are best preserved in dry, cool areas and protected from light.
Where are BAO products manufactured?
What’s the shelf life for BAO products?
Generally speaking, it is a contradiction to manufacture products that hold water and dissolve in water (or nature in general) at the same time. Our innovative coatings perform with liquids for many hours. As long as the material itself is not getting soft, you can use the product.
As long as the products, before their use are stored correctly, their shelf life is a minimum of one year.
Will BAO products compost in landfills?
We do not recommend disposing of any waste in landfills. But if, for some reason, one of our products ends up in a landfill, it will compost itself. Depending on weather conditions, the material will decay within 50 days, like other organic waste such as banana peels.
What happens if BAO products end up in the ocean?
We do not recommend disposing of any waste in the oceans. But, if for some reason, one of our products ends up in the oceans, it will dissolve. Also, since our product's ingredients are 100% natural, they can be eaten by fish.
Where can BAO products be composted?
What are composting conditions?
Our products' composting conditions are similar to the requirements of raw organic materials such as manure, leaves, grass clippings, or food wastes.
Can I compost BAO products at home in my garden compost?
Since our BAO products composting conditions are the same as raw organic materials, it's not a problem to compost our products in garden compost. BAO products will decay alongside other organic materials within 50 days.
Can I include BAO products in my household food waste collection?
Yes. Our products are made of 100% natural and organic materials. All BAO products can be disposed of in organic and food waste bins.
What are the benefits of compost?
Composting is officially defined as a type of recycling. Natural and organic waste becomes a valuable resource used as a fertilizer that nourishes the soil and improves its structure. Thus, the compost supports the development and growth of plants. Compost returns nutrients to the earth. Plus, natural compost can replace chemical fertilizers almost anywhere. This avoids environmental damage.
